Morton’s neuroma refers to chronic irritation of plantar digital nerve in the foot causing radiating pain in 2nd or 3rd web spaces of toes, diffusing & painful even transversing towards ankle (radiates proximally) associated with bursitis, degenerative arthritis, scarring above nerves entrapped by fibrous tissue. It is generally observed in high heel footwear users (ladies) and ill-fitted shoes wearers.
Physical medicine prescribed by doctor along with changes in footwears to transfer weight appropriately based on recommendations of podotrist is suggested. Surgical interventions, pain relieving by corticosteroids; anti-inflammatory drugs administration; Platelet rich plasma and stem cell therapy are ideal choices of treatment based on gravity of diseased state.
Toe crests are recommended to diffuse pressure among all toes , it reduces causative factor for such pains. Toe and Metatarsal Protector is also recommended if radiating pain is spreading further. Arch supporting insoles are also recommended so that radiating pain towards ankle is reduced. These functional orthotics can support and align however not meant to treat neuromas.
